Worker Co-ops: How to Get Started

May 7 @ 10:30 am - 1:00 pm

Are you looking for a different way to do business? Workers’ co-operatives are a great way of doing that – they are businesses run democratically by the workers to provide themselves with meaningful employment and to provide a service to the community, rather than creating profit for a boss or unconnected shareholders.

This workshop will inspire you to work co-operatively, to take control over your work life and change our society for the better, here and now.

Prices are on a sliding scale. Low Income tickets are limited.

What to expect

  • What is a worker co-op?
  • The practicalities of setting up a worker co-op – what you need, when you need it, and where to research further support.
  • Worker co-op organising techniques and practical tools.

What I’ll leave with

  • The motivation, inspiration, and knowledge to start this new adventure
  • Some core skills and ways of working with others to ensure you can build a great organisational culture

Who’s it for?

  • Do you have a business idea, social or community project, or need for a decent job doing what you love. But you want to share the work, responsibilities, and rewards with others?
  • Do you think you want to be a worker co-op but just aren’t quite sure?
  • Are you interested in worker ownership and want the knowledge and tools to advocate for the model and help others get started on their own journey?

The facilitator

Jo White has been working with co-ops of all types since 2000 and is a director of Co-operative Futures. In that time she’s worked with worker co-ops in a range of different sectors from childcare to IT to bicycle maintenance.

Jo was also chair of Co-operative and Community Finance, the main provider of finance for worker co-ops for eight years.
